My lessons are warm, upbeat, and filled with a balance of all the skills needed to jumpstart both classical music and contemporary styles as well! As a homeschool graduate, I began college early at age 15 for music theory and performance. I've taught at the Music Academy of Acadiana (in 2014, the year they were voted #1 music academy in the USA out of a pool of 75+ schools), as well as at schools in Austin TX (the "live music capitol") and privately. I am currently pursuing a teaching certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music, where some of my students are preparing to take exams. I favor the Piano Safari method, which is unique in that it doesn’t merely teach music reading through the medium of the piano - it forms well-rounded musicians who not only read extremely well, but also have excellent musicality and technique. My students also gain a deep understanding of theory and harmony through studying contemporary music! All my lessons are online, via video chat and digital lesson materials, and my students love the convenience of not leaving home! I use a lesson-specific video chat platform, which has excellent audio capabilities, and I utilize a two-camera setup so my students always have an excellent view of my hands. I'm also proficient in several languages, including English, Portuguese, Spanish and French. I’m Dr. Michele Cohen, and I grew up in Salvador, Brazil. My love of piano took me to the States, where I earned a Doctorate in Piano Performance from Indiana University and was mentored by some of the top pianists in the world. I have performed concerts at the prestigious Carnegie Hall and Steinway Hall in New York, the Brazilian Embassy in DC, and the Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series at the Chicago Cultural Center. I have also taught piano classes at Indiana University School of Music and most recently, I have developed a Musical Arts Program at the International Schools in Beijing, China. With over 20 years of experience, I teach students of all ages, from beginner to career pianists. My winning program takes the very best practices from pianists around the world, and each student will learn perfect technique developed from many years of experimenting! This allows you to play without tension, freely and beautifully at the piano. You will learn to focus on expressive dynamics, emotional connection, and artistic interpretation, crafting a sound that is uniquely your own. You will even learn the secret that makes reading music easy, using my unique interval-based method. Music Theory, History and Improvisation skills are always integrated in lessons in order to expose each student to the vast possibilities of Music as an expressive language. My journey in music started during my middle school years when I joined the band, and it continued throughout high school and college, and into my professional career. Along the way, I've had the privilege of learning from exceptional teachers, including some of the most accomplished musicians in Los Angeles. These experienced mentors exposed me to a diverse range of percussion instruments and styles, providing me with a well-rounded musical education. Their instruction and guidance expanded my horizons and deepened my understanding of different musical genres. Drawing from my professional experiences and the extensive training received from these esteemed instructors, I have become a reliable reference for various aspects of music. Whether it's exploring different percussion instruments, delving into specific musical styles, or seeking guidance on musical theory and technique, I can offer valuable insights and expertise. I consider myself fortunate to have had such enriching musical opportunities, and I am excited to share my knowledge and passion for music with my students.
